Game Play:

The object of ThinkFun Square By Square is very easy and simple for children to understand. After selecting a challenge card, the have to re-create it on the orange board using all of the green and blue tiles. As there are multiple ways to solve the puzzle, it brings an exiting new challenge each time.

Summary:

I gave ThinkFun Square By Square to my 7 year old. For her solving the puzzles was a challenge. She got the green right away but figuring out the blue was difficult. I think the blue took her about 30 min. For a little child, it was intense. Thinking it might not be her skill, I brought the game to a 7 year old neighbor fond of puzzles. With minimal assistance from his mother he also struggled. Even though they had some difficulties, they had fun. Every time they gone one blue piece that did not fit, the giggled as they came so close.

What I did like that although both my girl and her friend struggled with this game, after a while they were able to do it in about 15 minutes. I guess in a way ThinkFun Square By Square is like a brain training activity. It is amazing. The kids went from needing assistance to fully independent.

I really like games like ThinkFun Square By Square. At first with minimal assistance and positive reinforcement I get to help my child, and in the end they got gratification of doing the task alone.

Pros:

  • Fine motor skills
  • Hand eye coordination
  • Figure ground recognition
  • Geometry
  • Challenging
  • Nice bold colors

Cons:

  • Not for children age 5. I would recommend it for ages 8 and up.
  • The pieces on the orange board slide. That might be one reason it takes long.

Suggestions:

  • If you have a small child who wants to play, have the just do the green pieces. They will be playing a big kid game while doing a problem solving activity.
  • For a more advanced child, try taking away all the green pieces and have them solve for blue. This will greatly challenge the brain.

Age Range:

  • 8 and up
  • Child can focus without getting distracted

Bottom Line:

ThinkFun is a company that is known for their high quality educational games. ThinkFun Square By Square is no different. This game really helps the cild with multiple skills from hand eye coordination to  figure ground recognition. My little girl loves it. The first time she tried it, it was very challenging and she needed my assistance but now she is all independent. I like toys that will challenge and teach my girls in a fun way. ThinkFun Square By Square is a really great educational fun toy.
