Ocean Animals For Kids

Most of the vertebrates that live in the ocean are fish.
Some mammals, reptiles, and birds live there, too.
There is only one group of vertebrates not found in salt water.
These are the amphibians.

Fish have always lived in the sea, of course. There are more than 13,000 different kinds, or species, living in the sea. But the mammals found in the sea are descended from land animals.
They have to come to the surface to breathe, because they have lungs, not gills.

Fish in the ocean

Fish come in all sorts of different shapes and sizes.
Some are flat so that they can lie on the seabed without being seen.
Eels have snakelike bodies.
Rays, like the skate, are kite-shaped and seem to fly through the water by flapping their huge “wings.”

Mammals in the ocean

There are three groups of mammals in the sea:

whales and dolphins,
seals and sea-lions, and
some rare sea mammals called sirenians, which include the manatee and the dugong.

There are more than 75 different kinds of whales.
The blue whale is the largest animal that has ever lived. It can grow to be as long as 100 feet (30 meters)!
Whales need to come up to the surface for air, but sperm whales can hold their breath underwater for over an hour!

Dolphins and porpoises are actually small whales. The killer whale is the largest walrus

dolphin.
Have you ever seen bottle-nosed dolphins perform in an aquarium?
They are very intelligent. They communicate with each other by blowing air through their blow-holes to make squeaks, whistles, and clicks.

Seals, sea-lions, and walruses are the only sea mammals that move onto land to give birth to their young. Walruses look like large seals with two long, pointed teeth called tusks.

Reptiles in the ocean

Some turtles and snakes live in the sea.
Like all reptiles, sea turtles are cold-blooded, so they live only in warm waters.
The females come out of the sea to lay their eggs in holes on sandy beaches.
Most sea snakes never leave the sea.
They swim by waving their flattened bodies from side to side and by using their oarlike tails as a paddle.

Birds in the ocean

Penguins spend much of their lives in the sea, often hunting fish, their main food.
Instead of wings, penguins have flippers which help them to swim.
Penguins come to the surface of the water to breathe.
They move onto land to lay their eggs and raise their young.

Have you ever noticed how pleasant many flowers smell?
They have attractive scents, as well as bright colors, in order to attract insects. Insects use the nectar made by flowers as food.
In the process of getting the food, the insects transfer pollen from flower to flower.
The process of seed formation begins with this transfer of pollen grains from one flower to the stigma of another flower of the same kind.
This transfer is called pollination.
The main insects which pollinate flowers are bees and butterflies.
These insects feed on the sweet, sugar liquid called nectar that is usually produced by special cells in the receptacle.

On its way to the nectar, the insect has to pass the flowers anthers, which are covered in pollen. Some of the pollen sticks to the insects body and then brushes off onto the stigma of the next flower that the insect visits.
A thin tube grows from the pollen grain, down through the style, and into the ovule. A male cell, carried by this pollen tube, unites with an egg, and the ovule starts to develop into a fertile seed.

Wind pollinated flowers

Some flowering plants, such as grasses and hazel trees, dont have any nectar in their flowers to attract insects. These plants need the wind to pollinate them. The wind blows the pollen off the anthers of one flower and onto the sticky stigma of another flower.
The stigma of a wind-pollinated plant can be large and feathery, in order to catch the pollen more easily. Its the wind that takes the pollen from male cones to the ovules of female pine cones, too.

What are annual plants, biennial plants, perennial plants?

Some flowering plants, such as nasturtiums and giant sunflowers, grow and die in the same year.
We call these annuals.
Not all annuals are welcome in our gardens— many weeds are annuals!
Other plants take two years to grow.

We call these biennials.
Flowers such as foxgloves and vegetables such as carrots and parsnips are biennials. In their first year, biennial plants store up food. In their second year, they use the food, flower, and die.

Some plants, such as irises, madonna lilies, and begonias, go on growing and flowering for many years.
We call these perennials.

ePub stands for e-Publishing. It has been adopted as the international standard for publishing e-books. The ease of ePub is that any PDF text file can be uploaded into an ePub document. This means that many existing documents can be easily converted into an ePub full featured publication. Once you have published your e-book you can then give your student access to the document or you can publish it via your itunes. If it is something that others may use or enjoy you can even distribute or sell it via ibooks.

Benefits of ePub:

The open source and free format allows for reflowable text facilities. This means that it allows word wrapping, resizable text and in-line and vector images.

ePub also means that the files have metadata embedded in them which allows for the features that we have become used to with ibooks

definitions of words when clicked
can locate all verbs, adverbs etc in the whole document
embedded video and movies
live links to resources and websites
landscape or portrait capabilities
single or side-by-side page displays
it also has the support of many of the major publishing houses

Limitations of ePub:

the ePub format code does not allow for design features
therefore significant styling and presentation limitations
all graphics have to be anchored into the text, other features have to be reflowed into body text
therefore not great for textbooks - any design intensive layouts like sidebars or image callouts that look great in a printed textbook necessitate major redesign to meet epub standards
strange behaviour on different devices
ePub format targeted at limited content types - great for fiction

Conclusion:

ePub books will allow many people to publish their own e-books that will be able to be accessed using either itunes or ibooks on iOS devices. This provides the ability of drastically reducing the costs of texts for schools and the ability for teachers to differentiate texts for specific groups. Many of these will be excellent publications that serve the purpose they will be designed for.

The use of ePubs for textbooks is itself limited due to the restrictions of the design features of the present format. The whole nature of presenting information on the iPad is about the features. These are only good if the overall design of the publication is engaging and captures the students attention. The fact that many of the design features we can already do in design applications, Illustrator or Pages can not be incorporated into the ePub format let this down as an educational tool. It also means that many of the big publishing houses will simply produce PDFs of existing textbooks.

When this aspect of the ePub protocol is rectified than this will become a tool that really democratises textbook publication. Until then it can still be an excellent way to get documents or e-books on to your studentss iPads.

Getting Ready for Black Friday

I always wanted to be a Black Friday shopper. I remember as a teen watching my siblings so my parents can go out midnight and come back early in the morning with most of the gifts. It sounded like fun and I wanted to be part of it until I discovered the internet.

Yes. I fell in love. I spend a few days searching and finding the best deals from product rates to free shipping. I like staying in the comfort of my bed and getting what I need and want without having to push and shove others.

Some of my favorite places to shop online include Walmart and Target because they have everything for everyone.

My all time favorite place to shop for the past few years has been Amazon.

I think the real reason I love them is because they have sales all week long. It is like waking up to Black Friday for a full week.

The list of sales is always chaining from toys and games for the kids to jewelry and tools for the adults. It is amazing what I can find and free shipping is so low, I do not have to worry.

Check out the toy section. I get to excited every time I pay a visit because they really have all the top sellers at amazing prices.

Before I do my shopping, I try to have a list of what I know everyone will want. I like getting both practical and fun gifts for the adults and toys and games for the kids. As you know we are really into playing and just having fun.

This year, I wanted to share some of our favorite toys and games with all of you. Starting on Monday and going all the way to Wednesday, I will be sharing lists of some of the best toys and games we have tested over the course of the year.

As my blog has seem some amazing products, narrowing it down will be difficult but I almost got it.

I cannot wait to get going. It is going to be really exciting.
